Xanadu Quantam Computing

Deliverables:  2 brand videos (2-3 min each)
Stakeholders: Xanadu, Public Office, Teneo
Timeline: 10-14 Days
Budget: $8000
Role: Director, Editor, Colorist, Motion Designer

Additional Credits:
Stephen Nano (DP), Albha Egan (AC), Jefe Lin (2nd Camera Op), Emmanual Adarkwah (Gaffer), Radha Pithadia (Co-Producer)

Xanadu, a Toronto-based quantum computing company, was preparing to go public and needed compelling video content for their investor roadshow.

With a tight timeline, I directed and produced two brand videos: a founder story showcasing Christian Weedbrook's journey from academia to building Canada's first scalable quantum computer, and a vision piece explaining Xanadu's technology and market position.

The challenge was making highly technical quantum computing concepts emotionally resonant for investors while maintaining scientific credibility. Both videos were used in Xanadu's Investor Day presentations as part of their public offering materials

Xanadu Quantum Computing: Humanizing Deep Tech

Toronto-based quantum computing company preparing to go public, needed two distinct videos

The Founder Story: Christian Weedbrook’s personal journey from academia to building Canada’s first scalable quantam computer

The Vision Video:
Explaining Xanadu's technology, mission, and roadmap to investors and partners

The Constraints: Highly technical subject, multiple stakeholders, tight timeline, slim budget
Creative Challenge: How do you make quantum computing emotionally resonant while maintaining technical credibility?

Discovery & Strategy

Pre-Production
  • Studied reference materials provided by Public Office
  • Conducted pre-interviews to identify key narrative beats
  • Collaborated with Public Office on script and visual development
  • Scouted Xanadu’s upper and lower floor labs for visual storytelling opportunities
  • Tested colour treatment looks from test footage
  • Finalized gear list with DoP

Strategic Approach
  • Video 1 (Founder): Lead with humanity, not technology
  • Video 2 (Vision): Use Aurora quantam computer and mix of stock as visual anchor for abstract concepts
  • Tone: Quiet confidence over hype

Tools Utilized at this stage
  • Claude: For making script changes, testing paper edits, and weighing creative options
  • Milanote: Visual structure for storyboarding
  • Figma: Utilized for making presentation decks for multiple stackholders to understand workflow quickly
  • Google Suite: Writing and sharing scripts
  • Artlist: Finding stock footage that matched what we wanted to communicate
  • Are.na: For finding inspirational content

Overall AI tools helped me be a faster collaborator with time saved to remain creative and clearly articulate my vision on a tight timeline.

Production

Team

  • Agency - Public Office
  • Consultancy - Teneo
  • DP + AC
  • Gaffer
  • 2nd Camera Op (run and gun B-roll in active lab)

Visual Strategy
  • Shallow depth of field for intamcy in interview
  • Wide, symmetrical shots of Aurora computer (scale + precision)
  • Close ups of photonic chips (tactile, thumbnail sized)
  • Lab montage (as many shots in the lab as time permits in high quality)

Post- Production

Editing

  • Emotional Arc: Origin -> Obsession -> Vision
  • Intercut lab walkthrough footage to break up talking head segments
  • Used exact transcript quotes for searchability in client review process
  • B-roll used for visual metaphors and covering on-screen performance challenges
  • Stock wasn’t used as filler it was strategic based on the message. I color matched every stock shot to reinforce visual feel.
Pacing Challenge: On our first cut the client gave feedback saying that it had ‘felt slow then fast.’

Solution was to add strategic pauses, tightened transitions and used music to build momentum

Colour

A favourite part of the process for me. The philosophy was to utilize warmer tones for interviews and Christian specifically. Providing an approachable and human feeling to a video about labs and machinery. For lab shots we leaned into the cool clinical tones showcasing precision and future forward feelings.
Our challenge was dealing with mixed lighting in the lab which required precision in grading.

Full colour pipleline in DaVinci Resolve, Custom LUTs for lab consistency, Skin tone correction for multiple interview subjects.

Sound Design

Music: Understated. Organic textures meeting digital elements. avoiding ‘tech hype’ cliches. Utilizing samples from splice and ambience from ElevenLabs.  I auditioned multiple tracks easily with these tools.

SFX: World building with subtle lab ambience. Continuing splice usage for finding organic foley.

Mix: Voice standing on top of sounds. A non-intrusive score. Mixed directly in DaVinci Resolve.

Our client wanted music that felt elevated and complimentary to speakers. Not too dark and intense, but hopeful. For this I sourced a cinematic, non-intrusive score.

Utilizing tools like Elevenlabs, Artlist, and Splice to browse for music and sounds. Creating prompts that focused on elements such as keys and marimbas, ‘nordic minimalism meets scientific wonder.’

Motion Graphics

Animated effects to showcase Xanadu in the news. Utilizing motion to create pace that fit social landscapes and giving the video more overall style.

Animated circle effects, arrows, logo integrations and posterized text headlines were create in After Effects.
Scope Note: Motion graphics weren't originally scoped. Added to elevate storytelling and address client feedback on visual interest.

Client Collaboration

Feedback Workflow:
3 Revision Rounds across both videos:

Round 1:  Structural changes (narrative flow, opening differentiation)
Round 2:  Pacing refinement, music adjustment
Round 3:  Polish (specific shot choices, audio mix, colour)

Key Moments:

When asked to consider different shots like the final shot to exude confidence, I defended my creative intent while offering alternate versions.

When asked to add more examples of industry shots and more motion, based on our timeline I found alternatives to have impact but still meet our timeline and clarify the scope. Proposed trade-offs such as using highlighter effects on text instead of animating all text.
Learnings:

  • Translating vague feedback (’feels slow’) into actionable edits
  • Pushing back creatively vs. leaning into client vision
  • Protecting scope while staying collaborative

Final Deliverables

Additional Deliverables:
9x16 social media versions
Hi-Res Stills

Impact & Results

Metrics:
  • Used in Xanadu’s public offering materials
  • Ready to be played at Xanadu Investor Day conference on March 4th

What Worked:
✓ Humanized complex technology through founder's personal story
✓ Created distinct visual language for two complementary videos
✓ Delivered on tight timeline despite scope expansion
✓ Maintained creative vision while incorporating stakeholder feedback

What I learned:• Managing multi-stakeholder feedback without losing narrative coherence
• Protecting scope creatively (offering solutions, not just boundaries)
• Strategic use of AI tools to enhance efficiency without compromising craft
